About me
Mike Fernandez

crafter, designer and wood worker

Most importantly, I'm a husband and family man. After 22 years in the U.S. Navy, we have settled into a permanent home. Wood working started out with nails and screws, a hand saw and power drills and screw drivers. Over the years I have expanded my collection of tools and learned new ways to create some beautiful and useful things.

How I work

My process

Good things come together with clear action plan, but same is true with just an idea.

01

Research

If you want something created but not sure exactly what, then I can provide some ideas and directions to get started

02

Ideation

Sketch and design what you are looking for. This occurs before any work is started. A draft of what you are asking for.

03

Design

Create the designs you want carved, etched, and wood worked.

04

Create

Creation is the most time consuming of the process. This involves the cutting, attaching together, and finishing of the piece. Seals and colors take time to dry, but it's the finish that brings it all together.

A little about me

Hobbies

After retiring from the Navy, I promised my wife that I would make time for whatever she wanted to pursue. Some of that's been travel, some of it's been taking care of the house while she is active in Scouts and her job.

We've been few places and enjoyed some great things post military service. We are Arsenal supporters (English Football [soccer]) and I am a huge Beatles fan.

Creating things started out as making costumes for my kids. Crafting with paper, then resin, making weapons with foam and then I started trying my hand at wood creations.

I started out making wood chairs for people (Adirondack chairs). Saw, drill and screw. Labor intensive to say the least. As my work improved, I became interested in using a CNC machine which allowed me to take designs from the computer and carve it in wood. Adding more personal touch (with less manual work) in a shorter period of time. As I created different things (mostly at my wife's request) I became interested in adding a laser to my tools. Enabling me to add more designs and varying methods to end with something I can be proud of.
